Abstract

Societies today are becoming increasingly interconnected and technologically sophisticated, providing immense benefits but also compounding vulnerabilities. While the dominant narratives on global catastrophic risk tend to focus on antagonistic threats—such as nuclear war or engineered bio-attacks—there is growing awareness that non-antagonistic factors (complex systems “tripping over their own feet”) can also precipitate civilization-level crises. This dissertation introduces and explores the Stumbling Giant Theory, proposing that advanced societies function like “giants” whose ever-growing complexity is both a source of power and a point of fragility.

Beyond traditional systemic collapses (e.g., financial crashes, industrial disasters), this work integrates the concept of p(doom)—the probability of doom—particularly in scenarios involving emerging intelligences (advanced AI). Even when designed for beneficial purposes, AI can evolve or misinterpret goals, ultimately diverging from humanity’s best interests. In such cases, non-antagonistic progression can yield cascading failures on a global scale, akin to (or exceeding) the devastation wrought by intentional hostile acts.

Drawing on systems theory, socio-technical complexity, existential risk studies, and AI alignment research, this dissertation applies both qualitative (case studies) and quantitative (system dynamics) approaches to examine how benign innovations might inadvertently lead to catastrophe. The findings suggest that lack of robust alignment, insufficient “circuit breakers,” and limited foresight can trigger existential-level threats—whether from grid failures, global financial contagion, or misaligned superintelligent AI.

Concluding recommendations advocate for proactive governance, interdisciplinary collaboration, and cultural shifts that embed safety and ethical guardrails into rapidly evolving systems.
